Communion

Communion is taken on the first Sunday of the month. Communion or the ‘Lord’s Supper’ is an act of worship that involves eating bread and drinking wine. The term ‘Lord’s Supper’ refers to the fact that Jesus instituted it on the final evening of his life.

The Bible explains what happened during the meal:

‘Jesus took some bread in his hands. Then after he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Eat this and remember me.” After the meal, Jesus took a cup of wine in his hands and said, “This is my blood, and with it God makes his new agreement with you. Drink this and remember me.” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25)

Christians believe that this ‘new agreement’ was a new relationship between God and us. They believe that when Jesus was crucified He took away all the wrong things people had done and defeated the power of evil, so they could know God as their friend and loving Father. Although communion is a time to remember that Jesus died, it is also a time to be happy and thankful that he did.

The Communion service is also known as Mass, Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, and Breaking of Bread in different churches. Churches do this in different ways. If you do not wish to take communion, feel free to refuse the bread and the wine. At an appropriate time in the service the deacons will pray for the bread and the wine prior to communion being taken.

Facilities for the Disabled

We aim to make our church inclusive and to cater for the needs of those who have disabilities.  Although the church does not have a car park, there is parking space in the surrounding streets.

The main sanctuary of the church and the Christian centre, alongside the church, are both fully accessible for wheelchairs and other individuals with mobility difficulties.  A disabled toilet is available on the ground floor.  A hearing loop is available in the church sanctuary and the Christian centre.

Our History

A Brief History of the Church at Duckpool Road

Duckpool Road originated in 1875 when a small group of Baptists called a gifted nineteen year old preacher from Raglan to minister to them. Rev. A.T. Jones, had been working in his father’s coal business but obeyed the callof God. He remained in office for a ‘mere’ 42 years to be followed by Rev.W. Rowland Jones 1916-1921; Rev. Owen M. Owen 1921-1928; Rev. Alexander Leitch

1929-1948; Rev. J. H. Jones 1951-1961; Rev. Colin G. Lewis 1962-1978; Rev. Alastair Dickson 1980-1986; Rev. Royston Evans 1989-1999; Rev. Andrew Hubbard 2000-2005; and Rev. Laurence Weaver 2005 to 2017.

God blessed the congregation with significant growth to become one of the largest and most vibrant east of Cardiff. With large, well-equipped buildings and dedicated volunteers , DRBC has remained committed to sharing the love of God to Newport and beyond.

It is has been said on many occasions that God’s church is not the building but the people in it. Whilst this is very true it would be impossible to record the history of Duckpool Road without commenting on the structure of its building and the alterations that have taken place over the years.

An upper room in a tailor shop on Chepstow Road was perfect for just twelve Christians but it soon became too small and a tent standing in Livingstone Place, hired from a retired sail maker, became its next ‘home’. Eventually three houses were converted to become the Gospel Hall, its original name, before becoming Duckpool Road Baptist Church.

OUR PASTOR

Ray Pountney recently was inducted as the Pastor of Duckpool Road Baptist Church in Newport. His home country is Zimbabwe, Africa, a beautiful part of the world. Ray and his wife Judy were involved in Scripture Union camps during their college years. After getting married in Bulawayo Baptist Church, they went out to teach in a coal mining town situated near Victoria Falls in the Northern Province of Zimbabwe.

It was while serving there as a lay preacher in a local Methodist Church that they both felt the call to serve the Lord in a more full time capacity. In 1983 Pastor Ray and Judy began their training for ministry at Denver Seminary. It was there that they had the honour of being mentored by such giants of faith as Dr. Haddon Robinson and Dr. Vernon Grounds.

It was at Denver Seminary that Dr. Grounds’ words “Here is no unanchored liberalism, freedom to think without commitment. Here is no encrusted dogmatism, commitment without freedom to think. Here is a vibrant evangelicalism, commitment with freedom to think within the limits laid down in Scripture.” became formative to them.

After graduating from Denver Seminary, Ray and Judy returned to Zimbabwe where they had the joy and opportunity to serve in pastoral positions. They also served on the executive with the Baptist Union of Zimbabwe. They also were a part of Petra Christian School where Ray was the Head teacher.

In 2004 Ray and Judy received a call to serve in South West London where Ray served as the Pastor in both West Hill and East Hill Baptist churches. Now in 2026 Ray and Judy after a two year rest from frontline church ministry where they were blessed to live in the beautiful mountain town of Brecon and enjoyed being members of the historic Watergate Chapel they have now been led to serve Newport and Duckpool Road Baptist Church through the gospel ministry.

What We Believe

Our statement of faith is in accord with the Evangelical Alliance of Wales statement of faith as follows:

We believe in…

  1. The one true God who lives eternally in three persons—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  2. The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world.
  3. The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which alone are the written Word of God—fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.
  4. The dignity of all people, made male and female in God’s image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement.
  5. The incarnation of God’s eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ—born of the virgin Mary; truly divine and truly human, yet without sin.
  6. The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross: dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God.
  7. The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruits of our resurrection; his ascension to the Father, and his reign and mediation as the only Saviour of the world.
  8. The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ.
  9. The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness.
  10. The Church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers—given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit’s gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.
  11. The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfil the purposes of God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven and new earth.
